ADHD…Learning to live with it

ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can seem to many parents a nightmare or their child simply misbehaving.  Well, it’s time that we all understand that your child is not malevolent he or she has some functional neurologic issues that must be addressed.

ADHD is not simply having a child who is hyperactive is it the constant functioning of being a parent of a child who is “very active.”  Not only physically but also mentally.  A child with ADHD does not only move a lot they talk a lot.  Their minds are always going in a few different directions.  I like to refer to it like a pinball machine.  Just as the ball hits one target it bouces off and aims for another target.  That is generally how the mind of a child with ADHD works.

One thing to understand is that while we as parents feel that our kids never get tired it is just the contrary.  The brains of children with ADHD are extremely fatigued and require more stimulation which is the reason for the “on the go” hyperactivity all the time.

Understanding ADHD will help parents to better deal with children.  This information will also point you in the right direction for treatment and focus for your child.  As a parent we want to know the answers to the questions, “Did I do something wrong?”, “What am I doing wrong that she always acts out like this?”  The answers to these questions are simple, don’t worry about the “how” worry about the “now”.  Don’t try and drive yourself crazy about how you and your child go to where you are, instead, focus on fixing it now.
